Thanks, I did that and took your suggestion of using a small SSD and that helped greatly. The problem has been fixed

While you still have access to the server, navigate to System->General and click on the button "Save Config" to ensure that you have a backup of your current configuration.

It looks like your boot device is toast:
pool: freenas-boot
state: DEGRADED
status: One or more devices has experienced an error resulting in data
corruption. Applications may be affected.
action: Restore the file in question if possible. Otherwise restore the
entire pool from backup.
see: http://illumos.org/msg/ZFS-8000-8A
scan: scrub repaired 11K in 0 days 00:08:11 with 499 errors on Tue Jun 11 03:53:11 2019
config:
NAME STATE READ WRITE CKSUM
freenas-boot DEGRADED 0 0 317
da8p2 DEGRADED 0 0 636 too many errors
I recommend replacing it. If possible, consider using a small SSD rather than a USB flash drive.
I cannot get SMB service to start up. When I click running it just spits out a bunch of failure messages on the screen.
