FreeNAS stops responding reclaiming memory

Description

FreeNAS stops responding whenever there are high read/write operations.CPU load seems to increase and no data is captured by reporting tool (collectd).

Deduplication and compression is disabled across the pool so there shouldn't be excessive CPU usage.

This issue is persistent across versions i.e 11.2 and 11.3. Please let me know if any additional information is required.

3-4 times a week must be some other side of the issue. But that I'll probably leave to FreeNAS 12, since there with FreeBSD update we'll get improved memory management.

Thanks for the fix Alexander!

No, this is happens 3-4 times a week and I don't run VMs on FreeNAS.

I've reproduced and analyzed scenario that should happen one time after system first time reaches RAM saturation.  I've committed patch that should be part of 11.3-U4 that on my tests fixes this load spike and interactivity problems.  I can build you a custom kernel to test before that, if you wish to try it.

On the other side, do you see it happening after this initial warmup after system recovered from the problem first time? Because the particular problem I see and fix should happen only once until system is rebooted, unless you run VMs, start/stop of which actively modify maximal ARC size.

Theoretically less RAM should make it take less time, but it should also reduce ZFS caching abilities. How important is that and how much cache is needed depends on specific workload, and there are not universal recipes.

Hi Andrew,

Untill we find a fix for this issue, is there any workaround to make FreeNAS more reliable?

Will reducing the RAM on the FreeNAS server help here?  If yes, what will be the recommended memory size?

Thanks,

Saket Srivastava
