Cannot add time machine share in MacOS system preferences

Description

The error message says "The selected netork backup disk does not support the required capabilities."

Steps to reproduce: on MacOS: System prefs / time machine / seelct backup disk / select icon for "Time Machine on TrueNAS.local" / Use disk / dialog box says "connecting to truenas.local..." / enter account name and password. This triggers the error.

The selected volume should have been added to the list of Time Machine backup volumes.

The time machine share is on a zfs pool that was previously working on TrueNAS core. I can browse both a general-purpose SMB share (called "share") and the Time Machine share in the mac Finder. I can mount old Time Machine archives using the finder and browse the contents OK. It's just the part that's specific to Time Machine that doesn't work.

The client OS is 11.6.3 MacOS Big Sur. Am not attempting to run AFP. Time machine previously worked on this mac to TrueNAS Core via SMB, using the same zfs pool, which I've imported into TrueNAS scale. I did not update the pool's zfs capabilities to the latest version in TrueNAS scale, as that might make it hard to revert the pool back to TrueNAS core.

Thank you. It seems the problem here is macos reporting a "capabilities" problem when it should simply say there's no space left. Please go ahead and close the ticket.

The time machine preset you have set on your SMB share provides certain features:
1) it auto-generates separate datasets and share connectpaths based on the username used for authentication (so that when properly configured each user in an environment will have separate time machine dataset).
2) it auto-generates ZFS snapshots of the dataset after a successful backup is completed.
3) it auto-sets a ZFS user quota on the dataset in question of 1 TiB

Your dataset exceeded the user quota and so MacOS couldn't write to the share. I increased quota from 1 TiB to 10TiB and restarted backup job.

Hi Andrew, the Time Machine backup completed OK. Out of interest, what did you do to fix this?

Andrew Walker February 28, 2022 at 4:30 PM

Okay. Let's do it tomorrow at 3:00 PM UTC (9:00 AM CDT). My email address is awalker@ixsystems.com we can coordinate details for the remote session privately through that method.

Yes, I am around tomorrow. I am in UTC, can be available any time from 2PM UTC thru 6PM UTC.
