No. This auxiliary parameter should not be required. The legacy homes feature relies on pam_mkhomedir to auto-create home directories if they don’t exist. This can be somewhat unreliable in some situations as it relies on the NSS subsystem to return a home directory (which is not default in case of local users, and requires special configuration in AD case). I’ll see if you’re hitting an edge case, probably some time this next week.
