FreeBSD VM not able to use Spice to load its installer

Description

Summary: User is not able to use Spice/Display to install the FreeBSD VM. Spice stalls at the position noted in the screenshot below.

Expected Result: Should user attempt to use the “Display” /Spice method to install Free BSD, system should support this. Else, generate user instructions to bypass this by using “Serial Shell” for install.

Steps to reproduce issue:

  1. From Virtualization page, add a VM and configure the following:

    1. Guest Operating System: FreeBSD

    2. CPU Memory size = 4GB

    3. Disk Type = AHCI, select an existing pool/dataset for the VM, 10GB

    4. Set network to en01

    5. Upload installer for latest FreeBSD iso (e.g. used FreeBSD-13.2-RELEASE-amd64-dvd1.iso)

    6. Save config

  2. Set the VM state to RUN and click on the “Display” button to launch Spice. Note that the system stops at the exe below

Additional Notes:

  1. This issue does not appear for other VM configurations.

  2. User can continue install using “Serial Shell” as a workaround. Once install completes, user can then continue use of the FreeBSD OS via “Display”

  3. Issue appears also in Cobia Internal build 11

I’m pretty positive that this has been a problem with freeBSD since beginning. Even when we were using the novnc display driver on Bluefin.

Yes, only with the FreeBSD iso. I had attempted an install of a FreeBSD vm with a Scale iso and that was fine, but ran into issues with the FreeBSD iso.

Does this only happen on freeBSD ?

It seems the machine that was used is not online right now so there is no way to investigate this.
