SMB traffic not visible on apps dashboard inside the network row

Description

I was curious why my NIC download speed consistently remained at 2.5 Gbps, especially since all my containers were generating network traffic in the kilobyte range. It turns out that the culprit was my Plex instance, which generates video preview thumbnails. To accomplish this, it accesses video files from an SMB share on another server. However, this traffic isn’t reflected in the app overview page under the network column, which I find somewhat misleading.

Okay thanks but this is a rather difficult problem that is a limitation of docker. When you mount a SMB path into a container, the traffic originates from the host to the other side and not directly from the app. Adding this functionality would add a significant level of complexity that is fraught with many issues. For now we’ll be closing this ticket and will consider how to best solve this problem moving forward in the future.

I moved my Plex instance to a new server and decided to use Docker Compose for easier management. To do this, I installed the latest release candidate of TrueNAS SCALE. I mounted my movie library from another TrueNAS server using SMB. Since this was a fresh Plex setup, it needed to generate metadata for all my movies, including preview thumbnails at approximately 5-second intervals. These images are used to show a preview when hovering over the timeline while watching a movie. For my collection, this process took over two weeks. In Plex, this task is shown as an active process in the top right corner of the page.

Please let me know if any further information is needed

Thanks for the ticket! How did you determine that the plex container was actually generating data that was not being shown on the app card?
