When backing up a dataset to an external smb share, the memory used by services increases to the point where the SMB service gets disabled and the backup is terminated. I had to limit the usage by ARC to 25% in order to be able to backup more than 1 TB at a time. Toggling the SMB service off then on clears the memory leak.
