changes in BIOS of VMs not persisted

Description

I have a VM that does neither boot from a virtual disk (zvol etc) nor does network boot. Instead it should boot from a passed through PCI device (NVME). In order to speed up the boot process, I changed the boot order in the VMs bios (secure boot) and also removed the network boot options. I made sure that the changes got saved by pressing the respective keys shown in the bios (F10 etc), but the changes do not seem to persist.

Problem/Justification

When you change settings in a VMs bios (like boot order), these are not persisted.
